Stephen Hayes


Stephen Hayes has been a director of The Pines Care Center since 2003 and currently serves as President of the Board. He served as the Vice President of the Board since 2003 and became President in 2011. Stephen has served as a director of the Fire Island Pines Property Owners' Association and is a member of FIPPOA's Life and Property Protection Task Force. Stephen is the Executive Vice President of The Carey Group LLC, a real estate development and government relations specialist firm in New York City. Stephen lives with his partner, Mark Ski, on Teal Walk.

Demetrios Sengos, DDS

Vice President

Demetrios Sengos has been a board member since 2009.  He has been coming to the Pines since 1989, and has been a home owner since 2001, with his husband Peter Thambounaris.  He is President and owner of West 10th Dental in Greenwich Village, and has been practicing for 31 years.  He received his DDS degree at NYU, and his BS degree at Rutgers University.

Paul Hopkins II


Paul Hopkins joined the Pines Care Center Board in 2012, succeeding Jim Cashel as Treasurer.  Paul has an extensive background in government finance and administration and recently retired after nearly four decades serving in various capacities, most recently as Treasurer and Deputy County Administrator for The County of Essex located in New Jersey.  Among other positions, he was chair of the Governing Body of the Essex County Hospital Center, a short term psychiatric facility, from 1999 to 2002. He and his partner, James Keys, live on Beachcomber Walk.

Albert Lepage

Albert Lepage is retired and was until last year the chairman of a leading commercial wholesale baking company based in Auburn, Maine, serving the northeast United States. Albert was chairman of the St. Mary’s Health Systems, one of Maine’s largest healthcare providers, for six years, and he has served on the boards of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Lewiston-Auburn Arts and Hebron Academy. Lepage has also served on the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Governor’s Business Council.  Albert holds an undergraduate degree from Villanova University and a Master of Business Administration from Tulane.

Ron Martin

Ron Martin was a founding Director of the Pines Care Center and served on its Board for 22 years, including 16 years as Vice President.  He rejoined the Board in 2013.  Martin served two terms as President of the Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association (FIPPOA) from 2006 to 2010.  He was a member of the FIPPOA Board for 32 years, serving 12 years as Secretary and 14 years as Vice President.  Martin was a firefighter on the Pines Fire Department for nine years and is now an Honorary Member of the Fire Department.  He is a Past Co-Chairman of the Board of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC).  A resident of the Pines for more than 40 years, Martin is a retired senior public relations executive who worked for a number of major corporations including American Express, IBM, and Seagram Universal.

Karen Nicosia, RN

Karen Nicosia has been coming to the Pines since 1968 and has been a homeowner since 1987.  She is a graduate of Southampton Hospital and has 33 years of critical care nursing experience at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.  She is presently working with a neurosurgical practice in Patchogue.  She and her husband Larry have five children who grew up and have worked or are still working in the Pines.

Mark Ricigliano, DO

Mark Ricigliano, DO, joined the board of directors in 2010. He is President and Founder of Family Care Associates in Pennsauken, New Jersey. A graduate of Widener University, Dr. Ricigliano received his medical degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1985. He also serves on the National Advisory Board of Answer Sex Ed, Honestly, an organization dedicated to providing and promoting comprehensive sexuality education to young people and the adults who teach them, and the board of the Fire Island Pines Arts Project. When not in the Pines, he resides in the Queen Village neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Edwin Schulhafer, MD

Dr. Ed Schulhafer has been on the Pines Care Center Board of Directors since 1994. He served as president from 2000-2010.  He has been a FIPPOA director since 1993.  His bayfront house is located at 225 Bay Walk. He and Crayton Robey are the producers of "When Ocean Meets Sky" the fifty year history of Fire Island Pines, a documentary that has been on Logo since 2006. (More Info.) Dr. Schulhafer is an allergist-immunologist at his private practice, Allergy, Asthma and Sinus Center, located in three counties in New Jersey.  He also runs a cosmetic medicine practice in the same three locations called Capri Medical Spa.

Paul A. Teixeira, DrPH

Paul Teixeira has been a director of the PCC since 2005. He received his Masters and Doctoral degrees in public health from Columbia University. He is currently a National Library of Medicine postdoctoral research fellow in Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, focusing on public health informatics. He and his partner David Rimple have been residents of the Pines for the past 15 years and in their home on Shore walk since 2007.
